AI companion apps we don’t recommend, and why

Published · Updated

An app goes on this list for a reason about the product or about you as its user, never because of a commission. Each entry shows the reason, the evidence with its date, what to use instead, and what would change our mind.

An app goes on this list for reasons like these:

  • a renewal price the checkout doesn’t show,
  • cancellation only through support,
  • no way to delete your chats or your account,
  • characters presented as under 18,
  • or features built on photos or voices of real people.

The entries below come from reading each app’s own pages: the Terms of Service, the pricing page, the help center, and the homepage. Where the reason is a page anyone can open, the entry names its address, so you can read it yourself; this site doesn’t link to these apps. None of them gets a review, a place in a ranking, or a button here.

Not the same as a low score

A low score doesn’t put an app on this list. An app that scores below 7.0 keeps its review and its place in the Fine Print Index. It just stays out of the rankings until a new check lifts the score. This page is for the few apps we won’t send readers to at all, whatever they score, and the steps behind both decisions are described in how we check every app.

Each entry is rechecked when the app changes its Terms or its pricing page. If the reason is gone, the entry comes off this page and the app gets a review like any other. A reader who spots such a change can tell us through the contact page, and the entry is then compared with the app’s current documents.

SpicyGen

Why we don’t recommend it

SpicyGen is an image and video generator that accepts a photo as a reference. Its Terms of Service, as revised 10/06/2026, allow a user to upload a photo of a real person as long as the user confirms that the person has agreed, including to sexual content made from the photo. Nobody checks that agreement before a picture is made. We don’t review, rank, or link to any app where a photo of a real person can be turned into sexual content on the user’s word alone.

Evidence

Section 6.1 of SpicyGen’s Terms of Service (revision dated 10/06/2026) sets out the consent warranty for uploaded photos. The app’s own FAQ and help pages, read the same day, say the service is meant for AI-generated images only; the two documents don’t agree. Checked 10/14/2026. A revision of the Terms that bars photos of real people without exception, and an upload screen that says the same, checked from a test account.

Romantic AI

Why we don’t recommend it

Romantic AI’s own website advertises a tool for removing clothing from photos, and a testimonial on its homepage describes recreating a real person’s looks from an uploaded photo. Its Terms ban content that resembles real people, so the site and the Terms point in opposite directions. We don’t review or link to apps that offer either of those features.

Evidence

Pages of romanticai.com read on 10/14/2026: a landing page for the clothing-removal tool and the homepage testimonial, against section 7.4 of the Terms of Service. We don’t link to those pages or quote them. Checked 10/14/2026.

VoiceGF

Why we don’t recommend it

VoiceGF’s pricing page promises chats with named real people in their own voices, which its Community Guidelines and FAQ forbid. The homepage also carries character tags for themes we don’t cover on this site. An app whose sales page contradicts its own rules about real people doesn’t get a review or a link here.

Evidence

The slogan on voicegf.com/pricing and the character tags on the homepage, read on 10/14/2026, against the Community Guidelines and the FAQ on the same site. On that date Trustpilot had no review page for VoiceGF. We couldn’t read Reddit directly, and neither archived copies nor a web search turned up a VoiceGF thread. Checked 10/14/2026. Kupid AI

Why we don’t recommend it

Kupid AI’s character catalog has a category and ready-made characters built around school settings, and its homepage grid showed a character who looks underage. We don’t review, rank, or link to apps whose catalogs include either.

Evidence

The homepage, the catalog filters, and the scenarios of two ready-made characters on kupid.ai, read on 10/16/2026. We don’t link to those pages or quote them. Checked 10/16/2026.

Candy AI

Why we don’t recommend it

Candy AI’s character catalog, set up by the vendor itself, has an 18–21 filter and an anime section that invites school-uniform requests, with ready-made characters who look underage and story series built on step-family roles. We don’t review, rank, or link to apps whose catalogs include them.

Evidence

The homepage filters, the anime section, and the vendor’s short videos on candy.ai, read on 10/16/2026 and 10/17/2026. We don’t link to those pages or quote them. Checked 10/17/2026.

Apps that alter photos of real people

We don’t review or name apps built to remove clothing from photos of real people or to put a real person’s face onto other images. The people in those photos never agreed to it, so none of these apps gets a review, a ranking, or a link on this site.

If an app we already cover adds a feature like this, we stop recommending it and list it here with the evidence.

The apps we do cover are compared in the ranking of every AI girlfriend app we checked, among the uncensored chat sites we scored, and in uncensored image tools, compared. Their fine print sits side by side in the AI Companion Fine Print Index.
