Quick answer: An AI girlfriend is a chat character, run by software, that answers you as a partner would. You build or pick the character and chat by text, sometimes by voice. Free tiers are limited: Nectar AI’s free tier answered 15 messages before a limit on 10/16/2026. It’s enough for a first look, and longer chats need a paid plan.
What is an AI girlfriend?
An AI girlfriend is an AI companion app set up as a romantic partner. You get a character with a name, a look, and a personality, and it replies to your messages. The replies come from software, not from a person. GirlfriendGPT’s Terms describe the service as “a language model and chatbot created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.”
The apps sell the same idea under different labels. Lovescape’s Terms define a “Companion” as “an artificial (non-real person) character,” while its pages talk about AI girlfriends. The older label has its own page here: virtual girlfriend apps explained.
In the apps I checked, the girlfriend chat was one product among several. Nectar AI and Swipey AI also offered image and video features from the same account in October 2026.
How do AI girlfriend apps work?
An AI girlfriend app joins three parts: a character profile, a language model that writes the replies, and a paywall that meters how much you use them. The character comes first. Swipey AI’s builder on 10/17/2026 went through four steps: identity, appearance, personality, and scenario, with an age slider that starts at 18.
Its last screens set a style, an occupation, a place, a scenario, and a voice, then showed a summary before saving. I didn’t save that character. Most apps start you in a library of ready characters instead.
Then you chat. Before my first message, Nectar AI showed a “Helpful tips” window: actions go between asterisks, and a refresh icon regenerates a reply you don’t like. The character answers in its role, and the model writes each reply. How long a chat lasts comes down to the free limit and to memory, which is why we compare which apps keep the conversation going.
Memory is where these apps differ most. Nectar AI, GirlfriendGPT, and Swipey AI each gave back a test name and city at message 5 on 10/16/2026 or 10/17/2026. Paid plans advertise more: Nectar AI’s Premium lists an “8K Context (Memory).”
The paywall is the third part. Nectar AI’s free account answered 15 messages, and message 17 brought a “Message Limit Reached” window instead of a reply. Paid plans add coins, credits, or Hearts, a site currency for images, voice, and video.
Swipey AI spends that currency on the chat itself: a new account got 20 Hearts, and each message cost 2. GirlfriendGPT’s 30 free coins covered two images in its Safe Mode.
What can you do in an AI girlfriend app?
Text chat is the core, and the apps I checked sold voice, images, and video on top of it. In my free test accounts, most of those extras sat behind the paywall or ran on a small allowance.
- Text chat with a character you build or pick from a library. Nectar AI, GirlfriendGPT, and Swipey AI all start you in a library.
- Voice. Nectar AI’s character sent short voice messages on the free plan.
- Images. GirlfriendGPT’s free coins covered two pictures, and Swipey AI’s chat box offers an image button.
- Video. Swipey AI’s chat box offers a 10-second video, and Nectar AI’s “Media Generation” menu lists video.
- An 18+ toggle. GirlfriendGPT starts new accounts on SFW and asks you to confirm your age before the switch. Nectar AI starts with 18+ content on, and you turn it off in Preferences. Swipey AI had no switch at all.
What does an AI girlfriend cost?
The one price I could check from a US connection was Swipey AI’s: its pricing page showed $7.99/mo on 10/15/2026, which is its 12-month plan billed $95.99 up front. The other prices below came from sessions in Tanzania.
From Tanzania, Nectar AI’s Premium cost $9.99/mo or $59.99/yr, and GirlfriendGPT’s Premium cost $15/mo or $144/yr. Swipey AI’s checkout showed $14.99 for one month.
Plans renew until you cancel. Swipey AI’s checkout said, “Premium renews at $14.99 after 1 month.” Its pricing page button read “$5.99 / month,” yet that price matched the 12-month plan, billed $71.99 at once from Tanzania.
Prices checked 10/15/2026 on Swipey AI’s site from a US connection, and 10/16/2026 to 10/17/2026 in the other apps from Tanzania. Plus tax where applicable.
How do you get an AI girlfriend?
You get an AI girlfriend by signing up for an app, passing its age step, and building or picking a character. These are the steps as they went in my test accounts on 10/16/2026 and 10/17/2026.
- Pick an app with a free tier, so you see the chat before you pay. Our page on free AI girlfriend apps compares what each one gives away.
- Sign up. Nectar AI, GirlfriendGPT, and Swipey AI asked for an email address, then for a code sent to it, with no card.
- Confirm your age. Nectar AI and Swipey AI showed a window with one click to confirm. GirlfriendGPT asked for a ticked “I confirm that I am 18 years old or older” box after the email code, in a session from Tanzania on 10/17/2026.

- Chat until the free limit. In Nectar AI’s free account, message 17 brought the limit window.
Is having an AI girlfriend cheating?
That’s for you and your partner to decide, and this site doesn’t rule on it. What I can add is what the product is. The replies come from software, as GirlfriendGPT’s Terms and Lovescape’s site-wide notice both say.
What the app stores is a separate question with factual answers. Nectar AI’s Settings offer to “Permanently remove your account and associated data.” Swipey AI’s delete window warns, “This action cannot be undone.”
What to check before you sign up
Check seven things: the real price at checkout, the free limit, the statement name, cancellation and refunds, the age check, what happens to your chats, and the content rules. - Price at checkout. Swipey AI’s “$5.99 / month” button led to a 12-month plan billed at once.
- The name on your bank statement (billing descriptor). It can differ from the app’s name: Nectar AI’s checkout said the charge shows as “Nectar Vixen AI.”
- Refunds. GirlfriendGPT’s Terms say it “does not offer refunds for subscriptions that have been paid for,” except in “certain limited cases.”
- Chats. Secrets AI’s Privacy Policy lists training AI models among the uses of your data, with no opt-out.
- Age check. One click at Nectar AI and Swipey AI, and a tick box at GirlfriendGPT’s sign-up.

Lovescape’s site-wide notice says, “Content and conversations are AI-generated,” and Swipey AI’s Terms say, “You are interacting with artificial intelligence, not with a human being.” Still, neither Nectar AI nor Swipey AI showed an AI label in the chat itself on 10/16/2026 and 10/17/2026.
Can you get an AI girlfriend for free?

The better ones do, at least within one chat. I gave Nectar AI, GirlfriendGPT, and Swipey AI a test name and a city in the first messages, then asked for them back at message 5. All three characters answered correctly without leaving their roles. I haven’t tested memory across separate chats or over several days.
