You pick or build a character, then trade messages with it like in a messaging app. The replies come from software. GirlfriendGPT opens each chat with a reminder that it’s “AI-driven, fictional roleplay,” while Nectar AI and Swipey AI showed no such label in the chat.

Three things shape the experience: how much the character remembers, how many messages the free plan allows, and what the chat can send besides text. Voice and photos come up in the chat itself, and most of them cost coins or a plan.

What to check before you pick one

Step 2: Set up the character before the first message

Set the 18+ switch and the chat options before you write, because they change the replies. GirlfriendGPT starts new accounts on SFW and asks you to confirm your age before switching. Nectar AI starts with 18+ content on, and you turn it off under Preferences. Swipey AI had no 18+ switch in its settings at all.

GirlfriendGPT offers chat options when you start a new chat: reply length, descriptiveness, point of view, formatting, and language. On a free account, saving them brought a “Subscribe to unlock” window.

For my tests, I picked a clothed adult character from each library and started a new chat with no backstory.

Step 3: Check what she remembers in the first messages

Test memory in the first five messages: tell her your name, then your city, ask two unrelated questions, and then ask her to repeat both facts. That’s our script, and all three passed it.

GirlfriendGPT’s character answered, “You told me your name is Jordan. And you mentioned you live in Denver.” Swipey AI’s character asked back, “You are Jordan and you live in Denver, right?” Nectar AI’s character attached a 10-second voice message to its answer.

The tools to steer a chat differ. Nectar AI’s first window says, “If you don’t like the response, please press the refresh icon next to the message to regenerate.” You can also rate its replies with stars and edit your own messages.

Swipey AI offered thumbs up and down, with no regenerate button I could see. GirlfriendGPT shows a Suggest Reply button above the input field.

Step 4: Know where the free messages end

The free messages end at a limit window. GirlfriendGPT gave 10 replies, and message 11 brought “You ran out of messages” on 10/17/2026. Nectar AI gave 15, and message 17 brought “Message Limit Reached” on 10/16/2026.

Swipey AI counts in Hearts: 20 at sign-up and 2 per message, so message 11 brought a window headed “Unlock Unlimited Chat Messages” on 10/17/2026. After I left that chat, its character sent a new message on its own.

Nectar AI also moderates the chat. Once, an “Unsafe Message Detected” window replaced a reply after the character’s own storyline took a turn.

Chat quality and memory: how the apps compared
