Quick answer: A virtual girlfriend today usually means an AI companion app that you open in a web browser and chat with by text. On 10/16/2026, none of the companies I checked had an app in the US App Store. Free tiers ran from 10 replies at GirlfriendGPT and Swipey AI to 15 at Nectar AI.
What is a virtual girlfriend today?
A virtual girlfriend today is an AI companion: a character that answers your messages, run by software on a website. You pick or set up the character, then chat with it in the page. For the longer version, read what an AI girlfriend is and how the apps work.
The label is older than these apps. Search results for it still mix in video games and VR titles, which are a different product, and this site doesn’t review them.
Online is the normal way in. On 10/16/2026, the US App Store and Google Play had no app under the GirlfriendGPT, Nectar AI, or Swipey AI name. GirlfriendGPT’s website offers its own Android APK and a web app instead, and its company has a different product on Google Play.
The App Store did list unrelated apps with names close to Secrets AI and Nectar AI, so a store app with a similar name isn’t the same service.
What to check before you pick one
Check how the free part is counted, what sign-up asks for, and whether the app you found is the real one. Each app counts its free part differently, so the same word, free, covers different amounts.
- The free unit. Nectar AI answered 15 messages before a limit at message 17 on 10/16/2026. Swipey AI gave 20 free Hearts at 2 per message, so 10 messages.
- Coins next to messages. GirlfriendGPT’s free account came with 30 coins on 10/17/2026, which covered two images.
- Sign-up. Nectar AI, GirlfriendGPT, and Swipey AI sent a one-time code by email instead of asking for a password.
- The real app. Unrelated App Store apps use names close to Secrets AI and Nectar AI.
- Where prices appear. Nectar AI and GirlfriendGPT show their plans only after you sign in.
Step 1: Pick an app and create an account
Pick an app, then sign up on its website. Nectar AI and GirlfriendGPT asked for no password at all: each sent a code to the email address instead, with no card. GirlfriendGPT also asked me to tick a box confirming I’m 18 or older.
Swipey AI opened with an 18+ window, then took a Google, Discord, or Twitter login, or an email code, with no card or phone number. Its library and chats ran in the same browser tab.
Step 2: Set up the character
You either build a character or pick one from the app’s library. All three apps opened a library of ready characters after sign-up. Swipey AI’s builder asked for an age on a slider from 18 to 55-plus, among other settings. GirlfriendGPT’s chat options, such as reply length, need a subscription.
Step 3: Chat, voice and photos — what’s free and what costs tokens
Text chat is free up to a limit, and photos and video sit behind the paywall or cost tokens. In Nectar AI’s free account on 10/16/2026, the character replied 15 times, and message 17 brought a “Message Limit Reached” window with the plans.
Voice differs more. Nectar AI’s character sent short voice messages on the free plan. GirlfriendGPT keeps voice for its Deluxe and Elite plans, and Swipey AI shows a play button under replies, which I didn’t press.
Photos cost coins where they’re offered. GirlfriendGPT’s free account came with 30 coins, which covered two images on 10/17/2026.
How much a virtual girlfriend costs
The one plan price I could check from a US connection was Swipey AI’s: its pricing page showed $7.99/mo on 10/15/2026, which is its 12-month plan billed $95.99 up front. From Tanzania, its button read “$5.99 / month,” the same 12-month plan at $71.99.
Also from Tanzania, Nectar AI’s Premium cost $9.99/mo and GirlfriendGPT’s $15/mo. Nectar AI’s Premium lists 6,000 messages a month, so even a paid plan can have a cap.
Prices checked 10/15/2026 on Swipey AI’s site, from a US connection, and 10/16/2026 to 10/17/2026 in the other apps, from Tanzania. Plus tax where applicable.
If you’d rather use something else
Two more apps have a free start worth comparing. GirlfriendGPT’s Privacy Policy says, “After a free test of a few messages, you will be asked to register so we can identify you.” The rest of its fine print is in how GirlfriendGPT did in our checks.
Lovescape says you can create characters on a free account but publishes no free limits. What Swipey AI’s 20 free Hearts cover is on the Swipey AI free page.
How these apps compare on the fine print
The table lines up the payment and data answers for three apps, as of 10/16/2026 to 10/17/2026.

Prices checked 10/16/2026 to 10/17/2026 on each app’s site. Plus tax where applicable.

FAQ
What is a virtual girlfriend?
A virtual girlfriend is a character in an app or on a website that chats with you as a partner. Today the phrase mostly means an AI companion: software writes the replies, and you set the character’s name, style, and personality. The same label also covers some video games, which are a different product and aren’t covered on this site.
Is there a free virtual girlfriend app?
Yes, several have a free tier, but it’s short. Nectar AI’s free account answered 15 messages before a limit on 10/16/2026. GirlfriendGPT’s free account answered 10 messages on 10/17/2026 before it ran out. Swipey AI’s free account got 20 Hearts with no card, enough for 10 messages on 10/17/2026, and our free AI girlfriend page compares all three.
Can you chat with a virtual girlfriend online?
Yes, the apps I checked work in a web browser. You open the site, sign up, and chat in the page. Swipey AI, for example, opened its library and chat list right in the browser on 10/17/2026, with a Hearts balance in the header. You still need an account before the first reply.
Is a virtual girlfriend the same as an AI girlfriend?
For the apps on this site, yes: the two labels sell the same product. “AI girlfriend” is the newer word and points to the software behind the replies. “Virtual girlfriend” is older and broader, which is why search results for it also show games and VR. Our pages use “AI girlfriend” and “AI companion” for the apps.
How much does a virtual girlfriend cost?
The one plan price I could check from a US connection was Swipey AI’s: $7.99/mo on 10/15/2026, which is its 12-month plan billed $95.99 up front. From Tanzania, Nectar AI’s Premium cost $9.99/mo and GirlfriendGPT’s $15/mo. Images and voice usually cost coins on top of the plan.
Is there a virtual girlfriend app for iPhone or Android?
Not under the names of the apps I checked. On 10/16/2026, the US App Store and Google Play had no app under the GirlfriendGPT, Nectar AI, or Swipey AI name. GirlfriendGPT’s website offers its own Android APK and a web app instead. The others run in a web browser.
